Controlled Freedom - The Allied Forces in Vienna
13. Juli 2025, 14:30 — 15:30
Shortly after Vienna was liberated in early April 1945 a reorientation in the arts took place right alongside the political one. The driving force behind this was the Allies, consisting of Soviet Union, France, Great Britain and the United States. The resulting influx of international culture was unprecedented in the city’s history.
The exhibition sheds light on the formative influence of the diverse cultural offerings - from exhibitions, books, newspapers, films and radio broadcasts to spoken and musical theater. It documents a transformative project that lives on to the present day – the creation of a democratic Austria.
Together, we will explore the special exhibition and discuss what remains in Vienna from the decade after 1945 and what continues to have an impact today.
