The Wien Museum has an art collection of remarkable quality, size, and diversity. The foundation for the collection was laid through the donation of a number of exceptional paintings from the Biedermeier period by Johann II, Prince of Liechtenstein, in 1894. Since then, the Wien Museum has been collecting art in the form of paintings, graphic works, sculptures, arts and crafts, and architecture as well as object art, installations, photography, and video art. While it covers a period stretching from the 14th century to the present day, the collection places a particular focus on the Biedermeier period and on Viennese art around 1900 (Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Carl Moll, Richard Gerstl, etc.). The collection of contemporary art is one of the most important in Austria and contains valuable works from over 5,000 artists.
