The new Wien Museum

Wien Museum

1040 Vienna, Karlsplatz 8

The Wien Museum is home to Vienna’s extraordinary collection of art works and historical artifacts.  Its landmark building was created in 1950s. Following a major renovation and expansion, it was reopened on December 6, 2023.

The museum’s permanent exhibition “Vienna. My History” offers a chronological tour of the city, from pre-history to the present day.

On three levels, visitors encounter highlights ranging from a 20ft-model of St. Stephen’s cathedral and Gustav Klimt’s portrait of Emilie Flöge to Poldi, the Prater whale – the museum’s mascot. Admission to “Vienna. My History” is free!

Additional attractions at the Wien Museum include temporary exhibits on the top floor, countless offerings in the education and event centers, as well as a restaurant and café. The latter opens to a terrace with a spectacular view of Vienna’s city center.
