Loans

The Museen der Stadt Wien lend inventoried collection items exclusively to museum institutions. A facility report must be submitted; we also reserve the right to request comparative climate data for the exhibition space for the period in question.

Loan requests must be submitted in writing to the Directorate of the Wien Museum and must include the most important details of the exhibition project as well as a list of the desired loans.

In the event of a positive response, the Wien Museum will formulate specifications regarding transportation, courier and presentation.

  • Lead times: The official loan request for loans must be submitted to the Directorate of the Wien Museum at least 4 months before the start of the exhibition. The processing of a loan request from abroad takes at least 6 months.
More extensive loan requests, also in the context of cooperations, should be submitted as early as possible.
Short-term requests cannot be processed for organizational reasons.

  • Handling fee: The handling fee per loan object is 0.35% of the insured value, but at least € 370 (plus statutory taxes).

  • Restoration costs: Should conservation or preventive measures be necessary for requested exhibits in order to ensure their suitability for loan, the Wien Museum will pass these costs on to the borrower.

  • Transportation: The transportation of our loans has to be carried out by an art shipping company.

  • Insurance: The Wien Museum commissions the insurance cover, the confirmation of insurance and the invoice are sent to the borrower.

  • Loan agreement: We use our own loan agreement, which is sent to you after a positive assessment of your application.

In the case of international loan requests, an export permit must be obtained from the Austrian Federal Monuments Office before the loan agreement is concluded.
