Linguistic diversity in Vindobona. Vienna was always multilingual!

Römermuseum

1010 Vienna, Hoher Markt 3

Grades 1–6

Vienna was always multilingual and it still is today! Even before the arrival of the Romans 2,000 years ago, people from different parts of the world came together here and spoke many different languages. But which languages were these and how did people communicate?

After a short introduction to the location and the borders of Roman Vindobona, our aim is to investigate where these visitors to Vienna came from and what brought them here. The Romans had a sophisticated cuisine, which meant that traders from right across the Roman Empire and beyond brought a wide range of foodstuffs to the city. After first examining a series of objects and learning their names in several languages, we then help the pupils to recreate a marketplace on which they can display the fascinating objects from the Römermuseum. This gives them not only lots of exercise but also the opportunity to invent and use their own languages!
