History. Power. Images.
Wien Museum
Grades 7–12
It is almost 350 years since the Ottoman army besieged Vienna. Fabricated alien stereotypes from that period remain widespread today. The museum has also helped to keep these alive. Why are these depictions problematic, and what have they got to do with us?
In this workshop, we address our own identity, self-determination, and alien stereotypes. We discuss the relationship between society and the individual. By deconstructing paintings and objects from the Ottoman siege we illustrate the influence of rulers on society. We create new images and consider what we can do ourselves to counter social injustice.
