The Romans also defined themselves very strongly through their appearance, which enabled them to communicate their position in society to the outside. So what exactly did the inhabitants of Roman Vindobona do in order to have enough “urban chic”? What does someone’s appearance tell us about their social status, profession, or ethnic identity?
In this program, the pupils discover fascinating objects that offer clues about the ways in which the Romans groomed themselves. They also learn how certain Romans celebrated the notion of hygiene and find out about the special establishments where they could indulge this passion. The pupils conclude by trying on various outfits that enable them to slip into different roles in the society of Roman Vienna. In doing so, they learn not only how to put on the garments, but also what these garments tell us about the person wearing them.
