Whimsical figures in enigmatic settings - Tim Sandow's works refer to quiet nuances of the everyday. In unusual, sometimes alienating depictions, the artist romanticizes tragic protagonists in unguarded moments, such as a car dealer in a 1950s rock 'n roll costume or a woman with a child in her arms, surrounded by huge apartment blocks on the outskirts of a big city. Sandow's paintings always seek both gazes - the condescending, slightly cynical and prejudiced one as well as the romantic one filled with compassion and affection.
Chop Suey as a dream of the distant: a spoonful out of the dreariness of the predictable everyday routine. Although it is often associated with exoticism and foreign culture, it has its true origins in San Francisco as a dish made from kitchen leftovers. Similarly, in a figurative sense, the people in Sandow's paintings step out of their patterns provided by society. In the Startgalerie, he shows new works that address precisely this contradiction and, at the same time, the immanent desire for uniqueness.
