Born in Vienna in 1971; studied cultural anthropology and history at Stanford and the University of Chicago. Taught at the University of Illinois 1998–2014 (Assistant, Associate, Full Professor). Director of the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities at the University of Illinois 2003–2007; Director of the Program in Jewish Culture and Society at the University of Illinois 2008–2014; Director of the Chicago Humanities Festival 2010–2014; Director of Wien Museum from 10/2015 onwards. Honorary Professor for “Social and Cultural Anthropology” at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Vienna from 07/2016 onwards.
