DachArt #2
Käthe Löffelmann
The entrance pavilion to the Wien Museum is also a stage for street art – or roof art, to be more precise – with a different artist using it as a canvas each year. While murals in the city tend to prettify otherwise cheerless fire walls, here the artwork’s appeal is enhanced by an exceptional view. Added to this is the unfamiliar perspective, which also presents the artists with a challenge. For the roof art has to be viewed from above – from the terrace of the museum.
The current DachArt was created by the artist Käthe Löffelmann on the roof of the pavilion. Käthe Löffelmann (*1994 in Lower Austria) is a multidisciplinary artist working in photography, video art, installation, site-specific art, and painting. Her interests include sociocultural and political themes and ambivalent emotions, which she often conveys through humor. In public spaces she creates comic-like scenes with a message.
For DachArt #2, her design consists of multifaceted scenes that explore moments of social upheaval and resistance. Portraits of Käthe Leichter and Adelheid Popp, early Austrian women’s rights campaigners, appear alongside a Twitter quote on the subject of redistribution. The opening eye is a reference to Rosa Jochmann: “Getting people to think, getting them to see and to hear – that is our task.”
