A guided tour of the Haydnhaus for schools

Haydnhaus

1060 Vienna, Haydngasse 19

Grades 1-6

During his lifetime, Joseph Haydn was the most famous composer in the world. His decades as Kapellmeister for the Esterházy Family were followed by two triumphal concert tours of England. These enabled the musician to acquire, comprehensively rebuild, and move into an imposing townhouse in Gumpendorf (now Vienna’s 6th District).

Thanks to a careful program of restoration, Haydn’s final home can now be experienced again in its original condition. It was in the Haydnhaus that he composed many prominent works, including the oratorios “The Creation” and “The Seasons.”

The exhibition sheds light on many of Haydn’s fellow composers and on the admirers from home and abroad who paid court to him here. The house’s wonderful garden was recreated in line with historical models and is accessible to visitors – as a rare green oasis in the heart of a densely built-up part of the city, not far from the busy Mariahilfer Straße
